The SPCA Suncoast is hoping to follow on the heels of its successful Black Friday pet adoption expo with an even bigger Puppy Palooza on Saturday.
"We have puppies everywhere," shelter director Gail Armstrong said. "We went up to North Florida and the Panhandle to rescue as many puppies as we could."
The shelter will have more than two dozen puppies of all breeds available for adoption. Most are Lab and hound mixes, but there are small dogs, too.
"We've got one that's a Chihuahua-dachshund-Yorkie mix," Armstrong said. "I see all the breeds in him."
For Black Friday, the shelter lowered the normal $125 adoption fee - for any dog with a black coat - and found homes for 16 dogs. Armstrong said there's no need to lower the fee for the puppies.
"They'll fly out the door like they've got wings."
The SPCA also has partnered with Harley-Davidson of New Port Richey to hold a pet food drive. A handful of puppies will be on hand Saturday at the motorcycle dealership.
Although puppies make popular Christmas gifts, the shelter will not relax its rules for the holidays. The shelter will not approve an adoption unless each member of the family, including other pets, has met the prospective adoptee.
"We don't adopt our animals out as presents," Armstrong said. "People need to understand that when they take a puppy home, they're making a commitment to it for the next 10 to 12 years. Plus, they take a lot of work."
