Two school crossing guards assigned to Schrader Elementary have been named Florida's School Crossing Guards of the Year by the state Department of Transportation.
Robert Johnson and Antonio Alves, who work as a team at the Little Road and Star Trail intersection, were nominated by the Pasco County Health Department, which has offices near the school.
"Our children's health and safety is important," County Health Officer David Johnson said in a statement. "We appreciate our partners who help protect our children and applaud these crossing guards for the job they do every day to help keep them safe."
School crossing guards are part-time workers employed by the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.
The Department of Transportation honors crossing guards each February and the first Friday of February is School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.
