Three people were killed and several others injured in a three-car crash in Zephyrhills Sunday.
About 10:55 a.m., a 2008 Volkswagen Passat, driven by Deborah Wright of Vermont, was stopped in traffic westbound on State Road 54, just east of Ernest Drive, when a 2000 Toyota Solara, driven by Dustin Diaz, approaching from behind swerved to avoid a collision, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The Toyota clipped the Volkswagen and the impact pushed the Volkswagen onto the shoulder, while the Toyota hit a 2002 Toyota Avalon head-on, killing three passengers in that vehicle, according to the FHP.
The driver of the Avalon, Wayne Laribee, 75, and his wife Elizabeth Laribee, 70, were transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition.
The three passengers in the Avalon who died were Lavon Hartman, 90, of Zephyrhills, along with Charles Anken, 78, and his wife Georgianna Anken, 77, both of Holland Patent, N.Y.
Diaz, 22, of Wesley Chapel went to St. Joseph's Hospital in critical condition. Wright, 64, and her passenger, Darlene Petersen, 79, were uninjured.
