Patients at Community Hospital in New Port Richey were relocated Tuesday to the Medical Center of Trinity on State Road 54.

The hospital transferred 112 patients by ambulances during the day. Community Hospital had 126 patients Tuesday and 14 were discharged.

At 7:05 a.m., Robert Frank of New Port Richey was the first patient to enter the doors of the Medical Center of Trinity. He, along with several other representatives of the hospital, cut the red ribbon to officially open the new hospital.

As of 12:30 p.m., 70 patients and one baby had been relocated to the Trinity hospital.

Hospital spokeswoman Mary Sommise said the move went smoothly. The hospital staff remarked on the "tremendous calmness" in the building as the patient transfer continued during the day, she said.

Patients in the behavioral health program will remain at the old hospital location in New Port Richey, which is being renamed Medical Center of Trinity — West Pasco Campus and will also offer outpatient physical and occupational therapy.

The medical center said it developed its patient move plan with the guidance of Healthcare Transitions, a national organization with 23 years of experience guiding hospitals through patient moves. The plan has been nearly a year in the making. The new location at 9330 State Road 54 includes a five-story hospital tower, a four-story medical arts building and 236 patient beds.

Access to the Medical Center of Trinity was limited Tuesday to the hospital's healthcare team, registered visitors for patients transferred from Community Hospital and those needing emergency care.  Beginning 8 a.m. Wednesday, normal visitation to patients and visitor access will begin.

With the move, the emergency room at Community Hospital closed at 7 a.m. Tuesday and all emergency care moved to the Trinity hospital.
