DADE CITY - Have cavy, could win.
The 61st annual Pasco County Fair in February will again open its rabbit show to the short-tailed rodents from South America, of which the guinea pig is the most recognized.
The deadline for Pasco kindergartners through 12th-graders to enter that show, plus the poultry competition, is Jan 11.
Each exhibitor can enter up to three rabbits or birds, but only one cavy. The fee is $2 per animal.
Only breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders and the American Poultry Breeders associations will be accepted.
Students are to bring their entries and cages to the fairgrounds off State Road 52 from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 17. The shows start the next day and run through Feb. 24.
All 4-H and FFA members and independent exhibitors must enter record books for competition.
Versions for rabbits and poultry are available online at www.pascocountyfair.com.
Also planned are an egg contest and an egg-decorating competition.
Leslie Rookey is chairperson of the Youth Poultry Show and Leon Rookey is heading up the Youth Rabbit and Cavy Show.
