SAN ANTONIO - Facing a Thanksgiving alone? Don't have much money to spare for turkey and the trimmings?
Have a holiday meal on the Benedictine Sisters of Florida and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
The free meal will be served from 2 to 3 p.m. Nov. 22 at St. Anthony Parish Center, 32832 Massachusetts Ave., directly behind the church. Reserve a spot at the table by Nov. 16 by calling the sisters at (352) 588-8320 or the church at (352) 588-3081.
Requests also will be taken for transportation and for delivery to the homebound.
Volunteers and donations are always welcome, said Sister Mary David of the planning committee. Entire families have participated in the past, working in all areas of food preparation. Ellen Mejias again will be the kitchen manager at the parish center, and her children help with the hospitality and serving.
The Benedictines' commitment "to respond with the compassion of Christ to physical, emotional, spiritual and social hungers" spurred the first Thanksgiving meal in 1996. Last year 336 meals were served, including 30 sent to the San Antonio Boys Village and 25 to Sunrise of Pasco's domestic violence shelter.
