Pasco Deputy Shoots Dog He Says Was Attacking Him

Pasco County Sheriff's Office Deputy Matthew Kadel acknowledges that he shot and killed a pit bull that bit him on the left arm and leg and repeatedly charged at him this week.

After the shooting, the dog's owners, who say the animal was chained when it was killed, threatened to "hunt me down and shoot me," Kadel said in a sheriff's report.

The incident happened about 9:37 a.m. Thursday, when Kadel was dispatched to help a county building inspector perform a minimum housing standards inspection at 8628 Adonis Drive, records said.

According to the sheriff's office:

Kadel was walking toward the residence when the dog bit him on the left arm and leg before going back to its doghouse. As Kadel knocked on the front door, the dog then advanced toward the inspector.

Kadel said the dog was not on a leash.

The dog came at Kadel again. It was about 2 feet away when Kadel shot it in the head. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian, but died.

About a minute after the shooting, six people came out of the house.

Kadel said that Russell Lane, 27, and Michael Lane, 25, who live at the house on Adonis, pounded their chests and told him to shoot them. The Lanes repeatedly threatened retaliation, said Kadel, whose wounds were cleaned at the scene with hydrogen peroxide.

Kadel is awaiting results of a rabies test done by the county animal services department.

The building inspector was expected to complete his investigation at a later time, records said.
