NEW PORT RICHEY - They start with a Grecian leather cord and then have crystals, pearls, horse hair, feathers, silver and other exotic and ordinary materials added.
Learn to make these neckpieces Saturday when Progress Energy Art Gallery hosts "The Art of the Embellished Cord."
Pam Casey will lead the jewelry-making class from noon to 4 p.m. at the downtown gallery on Grand Boulevard, just south of Main Street and neighboring the Richey Suncoast Theatre.
The cost is $55 ($49.50 for gallery members).
"Neckpieces using unusual decorative applications around Grecian leather cord give this line a very distinctive look," the gallery said in a statement. "Each work begins with heavy leather cord that is hand painted in multiple layers of non-tarnishing acrylic to create two-tone color, aged or gilded effects.
"Then it is treated with a catalyst for extra hardness and durability. The cord is then embellished using wire and ... materials including: freshwater cultured pearls with good luster, semiprecious stones, abalone, coral, mother of pearl, horse hair, feathers, fur, seed beads, vintage beads and beads of glass, Swarovski crystal, raku, bone, sterling silver, gold vermeil or clay.
"Quality gold-filled, sterling silver or copper wire components have been attached to the leather cord using drilled holes and a strong adhesive that is able to withstand average handling."
