WESLEY CHAPEL - A Meadow Pointe woman has been selected as a semifinalist in the America's Favorite Mom contest and will appear on NBC's "Today" show on Friday.
In February, Ron Couture nominated his wife, Lisa, for the title of America's Favorite Mom, a national competition, sponsored by Teleflora, in which people vote online for mothers whose lives and accomplishments set an example for others.
"If I receive enough votes I may be selected as a finalist and appear on a prime-time special on Mother's Day at 7 p.m.," Lisa Couture said in a statement.
Friday, "Teleflora invites your local residents to vote for Lisa ... so she can continue on to the final," a news release stated. The Web site is www.nbc.com/Americas_ Favorite_Mom/.
Couture is competing in the "Chairman of Everything" category of mothers.
Because of a bout with roseola and a high fever at 18 months, Couture has amblyopia, a condition that impairs her vision. She has been legally blind since 1987, walked with a cane since 2004 and is unable to drive.
Her peripheral vision also has failed; she experiences triple vision and sees only a limited amount of color in her left eye.
Despite those obstacles, Couture cares for the couple's three children - ages 4 through 7 - and helps care for her father, Joe Staney, who is recovering from a heart attack.
"I truly appreciate everyone's support and feel blessed to have this opportunity," Couture said.
Teleflora will present the grand prize winner with $250,000, an America's Favorite Mom diamond-encrusted pendant and a year's worth of Teleflora flower arrangements.
