Opponents Slam Landfill Project

DEP gathering opinions on project

Opponents of a proposed landfill outside Dade City packed Pasco Middle School Tuesday night to express their opposition to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The DEP is reviewing an application to build a 90-acre landfill off Enterprise Road, outside Dade City. The company that wants to build the landfill, Angelo's Aggregate Materials of Largo, owns 900 acres in the area and runs a small construction debris landfill across the street.

More than 100 people showed up to Tuesday night's meeting, many from Protectors of Florida's Legacy, the group organizing opposition to the landfill.

Wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan, "Vote No Landfill," critics charged that the landfill would pollute nearby water supplies, leading to public health problems; make area roads more dangerous with heavy dump truck traffic; drive down property values and would, in a word, smell.

Those with a kind word for the project were few and far between Tuesday.

DEP staff members held the meeting to gather public input as part of its permit review process for the landfill. Should DEP decide to grant Angelo's the permits it needs, the company would then have to get the county commission's approval for its project.
