He won't be dressing up in a red suit, but City Manager Billy Poe hopes to play Santa this year for employees who have gone two years without a pay raise.
He's asked City Commissioners to approve a $250 Christmas bonus for all full-time employees; part-time workers would get $125. The bonuses would cost the city $20,750.
"I'm hoping it's going to be alright," Poe said. "I think it should be, because we're not asking for any additional money."
That's because the current budget includes funding for both a building official and a building inspector, but the city will be leaving the inspector position vacant.
Poe said he broached the subject with several commissioners before placing the request on Tuesday's agenda.
"If he thinks it's a good idea, I'm inclined to go along with it," Commissioner Curtis Beebe said. "My philosophy is we hired Billy to run the staff and motivate the staff. They've gone a long time without a raise, and they've had to sit by and watch everything get chipped away and whittled away."
