A Palm Harbor man was killed and several people were injured in a four-car crash Friday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
James E. Kiewra, 52, died when the vehicle in which he was a passenger was rear-ended on State Road 54 at Rowan Road.
Investigators say Thomas Fitzgerald, 54, of Trinity, was driving a 2003 Ford Sport Trac east on S.R. 54 about 7:40 p.m. when he failed to slow for a traffic signal. The Ford rear-ended a 2001 Honda Accord that had stopped for the light and then struck a 2003 Infiniti G35 in the northbound lanes of Seven Springs Boulevard.
The collision pushed the Honda into the intersection, where it was struck by a 2003 Ford Explorer heading south from Rowan to Seven Springs.
Kiewra was a passenger in the Accord, which was driven by Corey Erario, 39, of Land O' Lakes, the patrol said. The other passengers were Carla Erario, 38, also of Land O' Lakes, and Karen Kiewra, 52, of Palm Harbor.
Troopers said the Erarios were taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg in serious condition; Karen Kiewra was in critical condition.
Fitzgerald was transported to Community Hospital in New Port Richey in serious condition.
The Infiniti's driver, Christopher J. Alfonso, 32, of Clearwater, and his passenger suffered minor injuries, troopers said.
The Ford Explorer's driver, Tina Peyton of New Port Richey, and her three passengers, including two children, also received minor injuries.
