It's 'Springtime for Hitler' at Show Palace

Tough times call for some light moments.

That was one of the reasons the musical comedy "The Producers" was chosen to kick off the 2009 season at the Show Palace Dinner Theatre in Hudson.

"For these times right now, it's great to go to a show and laugh," said Show Palace artistic director and cast member Matthew McGee. McGee plays flamboyant director Roger DeBris.

Other cast members include Show Palace regulars Michael L. Walters as producer Max Bialystock and Michael Ursua as accountant Leo Bloom. Erin Romero is Ulla, the Swedish sex siren whom Bialystock and Bloom hire as their receptionist.

The plot concerns Bialystock and Bloom's conspiracy to produce a Broadway flop in order to bilk their investors. To the hapless duo's surprise, the musical ends up a smash hit.

The Broadway comedy opened in 2001 and ran for 2,502 performances. It was based on Mel Brooks' 1968 film of the same name. During its stage run, it garnered a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards, including best musical.

The score contains perennial favorites such as "Springtime for Hitler" and "I Wanna Be a Producer."

The over-the-top plot - swindle big bucks by mounting the worst, most offensive musical production in the history of the theater - features tap-dancing Nazi storm troopers, a mincing Hitler and a kick line of German soldiers. The plot contains strong language and adult humor and is recommended for theatergoers 16 and older. "Mel Brooks is an equal opportunity offender," McGee said.

Todd M. Eskin marks his return to the Show Palace as director. Eskin recently directed the national tour of "Arthur Live!" for Turnstile Productions.

The Show Palace Dinner Theatre production of the musical "The Producers" runs through Feb. 22. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. Sunday matinee is at 3 p.m. Tickets are $46 for dinner and show and $34.95 for show only. Prices do not include tax.
