Port Richey adds traffic cameras

Saying "cheese" is not required.

But if motorists run a red light at Richey Road (across from Ridge Road) and U.S. 19, they better expect to get their picture taken.

Beginning at midnight Saturday, red-light cameras will be activated at that intersection, including the eastbound lanes on Richey Road and the left-turn lane to the northbound lanes on U.S. 19.

The cameras will take several pictures of the red-light runner, the vehicle and its tag. Violators will then be tracked down and receive a written warning in the mail from Traffipax Inc., the company monitoring the intersection.

A warning will go to motorists who violate the city's red-light ordinance through midnight Nov. 30. After that grace period, those who don't stop can expect a fine of $150.

The city plans on adding more cameras to busy intersections.

Port Richey started using traffic cameras at Ridge Road and U.S. 19 in May 2008 as a way to combat traffic violators.

Within the first two months, more than 570 violators have been photographed.
