Police still investigating bomb scare at New Port Richey supermarket

While New Port Richey police officers investigate leads, they aren't releasing much new information about Sunday night's bomb scare at a Sweetbay Supermarket.

"We're following up with some that we're hopeful could lead to the identification of the suspect," Capt. Jeffrey Harrington said this afternoon.

He said police didn't want to impede the investigation by releasing information too early.

About 5:30 p.m. Sunday, a man brought a package covered by tape with wires hanging out to the grocery store at 6400 Massachusetts Ave., police said. The man placed the package on the customer-service counter and demanded money, police said.

Shortly after, the store was evacuated by police and the Tampa Police Department's bomb squad was called. The squad detonated the package just after 9 p.m.

Nobody was injured.

Police haven't said whether the man got away with any money before fleeing the store.
