A former Port Richey police sergeant has been fired after being arrested on federal drug charges.
U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agents arrested James Ruland, 33, Friday morning, while he was off-duty.
Port Richey Police Chief Dave Brown said he fired Ruland that afternoon.
Ruland had been with the police department for seven or eight years, Brown said. The patrol sergeant was one 12 officers in the department.
"This has definitely put a shock to us," Brown said.
Ruland is being held in the custody of the U.S. Marshall's Service in the Pinellas County Jail. Jail records do not indicate whether bail has been set or what charges he faces.
