2 children hit by car near Holiday school

A teenager and her younger brother were hurt this afternoon when they were hit by a car near Gulf Trace Elementary School in Holiday, authorities said.

The boy had a broken leg, and the girl had neck and head injuries, Pasco County sheriff's spokesman Doug Tobin said. The injuries are not life-threatening, Tobin said.

Both children were taken to Bayfront Hospital and are in stable condition, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Breanne McIntyre, 14, and her brother, Trent McIntyre, 10, both of Holiday, were walking home from the school shortly before 4 p.m. today when Sheila Jean Rogers blacked out and lost control of her 2007 Lincoln, FHP said.

A tearful Rogers was contrite and relieved that the accident didn't end with a fatality. Rogers, 42, of Holiday, told investigators she doesn't remember the crash.

"I know it's not a seizure," said Rogers, after the accident. "It's got to be a blackout. I don't remember my actions exactly. All I do remember is that I made that turn and put on the gas."

Rogers, who was heading to the school to pick up her son, drove onto the north sidewalk of Gulf Trace Boulevard, hitting the siblings and then crashing into a chain-link fence, FHP said.

Rogers' car stopped about 30 feet south of the collision and was partially on the sidewalk and the road, FHP said.

The crash doesn't appear alcohol related, FHP said. Rogers suffered no injuries. Her vehicle sustained $2,000 of damage.

The case remains under investigation.
