A $500 first place prize will be offered in Pasco County Idol Karaoke, a competition scheduled to kick off at 5:30 p.m. today at Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club, 10641 Old Tampa Bay Drive, in San Antonio. The other big winner of the competition will be HPH Hospice, which will benefit from this musical fundraising event.
"What we really want to do is raise a lot of money for hospice," said Dave Potvin, activities director of the Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club. "We have quite a few people here who go to hospice. They do a great job."
For the past four years, in fact, Pasco County Idol Karaoke has not only served as a musical competition in which contestants croon everything from country music to Dean Martin classics, but also as a fundraiser for local nonprofit agencies.
"Last year we raised $2,200 for Standing Call for Veterans," Potvin said.
For the first time this year, Pasco County Idol Karaoke is open to the public.
"People like being up on that stage and singing," Potvin said.
The competition will run today, March 11, 18 and 25, with local celebrity judges offering commentary on contestants' performances.
"They offer comments and will always say something nice," Potvin said.
Audience members will vote to advance people to different phases of the competition, with the final round March 25.
Guests also will have the option of buying meals at the event, ordering from a menu that will include grilled New York strip, chicken breast, Salisbury steak, a fish finger basket, and hot dogs.
"They can sit down, enjoy a meal, and enjoy the music," Potvin said.
Admission for the competition is free; voting ballots are $1 each. To find out more or to enter, call (352) 588-0059.
