Pasco County residents can weigh in Tuesday evening on how their tax dollars will be spent next year at the first of two public hearings on the 2010-11 budget.
County commissioners will review proposed increases in property taxes that support fire and rescue services and the county's day-to-day operations.
The suggested fire rescue tax hike of $1.38 per $1,000 in value would restore some firefighting jobs that were cut this year. The proposed 22-cent general fund tax increase would provide $4.4 million of additional revenue, the bulk of which commissioners plan to use to cushion next year's budget, which takes effect Oct. 1.
Commissioners expect to cut 76 jobs - 40 of which are currently filled - as part of their budget reductions.
The continuing slide in property values across the county means many property owners are likely to see their taxes fall, despite the rate hikes.
Tuesday's hearing at the historic Pasco County courthouse in Dade City will start at 6:30 p.m.
Commissioners will hold a second hearing this month, then vote on the budget.
