1 dead after Port Richey dump truck crash

NEW PORT RICHEY A vehicle rear-ended another vehicle, causing a chain reaction involving four vehicles Tuesday afternoon that led to the death of a driver, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Ruben Echevarria, 59, of Port Richey, died from injuries he sustained in the 3:18 p.m. accident at Ridge Road eastbound just west of Galen Wilson Boulevard, the patrol said.

Echevarria, who was in a 2007 Chevy pickup truck, was stopped for traffic behind two other vehicles, the patrol said.

Daniel Howard Arends, who was driving a 1998 Mack dump truck, failed to stop and rear-ended Echevarria's pickup. Echevarria then rear-ended the car in front of his, which was a 1996 Ford Mustang. The Mustang rear-ended a 2007 Saturn, the patrol said.

Arends' dump truck ended on top of Echevarria's pickup, the patrol said.

Arends and the driver of the Saturn, John Shelak, 62, of New Port Richey, suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Mustang, Darynn Magee, 24, of New Port Richey, and the passenger in the Saturn, Bonnie-Jean Shelak, 59, suffered serious injuries, the patrol said.

The accident occurred in front of the Chasco schools complex on Ridge Road. Eastbound Ridge Road between Chasco Woods Apartments past the schools was closed to traffic for several hours.
