The dogs in the Pasco County Sheriff's Office's K-9 unit now have a place to call their own.
The sheriff's office opened its K-9 kennel and training facility Tuesday near the Land O' Lakes Jail. It will serve as a headquarters for the dogs and the deputies who train them.
The kennel includes a wash basin for bathing the dogs, stop No. 1 when the K-9s come back muddy after chasing down a suspect in a swamp.
Typically, the dogs reside with the deputies who work with them, so they won't live at the kennel.
The K-9 unit has never had a kennel, said Kevin Doll, a spokesman with the sheriff's office. The kennel was built using donated money, materials and labor, the sheriff's office said.
Tuesday's kennel dedication included remarks by Sheriff Chris Nocco and a demonstration of skills by a 4-year-old German shepherd named Ace, who put the bite on protective padding worn by Deputy Cliff Baltzer.
Ceremony attendees also got a tour of the facility.
