Now and then even animals can use a little help from above.
And if past years are any indication, area pet owners will flock to The Three Legged Poodle on Oct. 1 to make sure they get it.
Unity Community of Joy and the pet boutique are hosting the fifth annual Blessing of the Animals. Hundreds are expected to attend with animals in tow.
Spiritual leaders from several churches in the area, including Betty Martin Lewis of the Unity church, Religious Science practitioner Debbie Wiley and the Rev. Tracy Wilder of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, will lay hands on more than 100 pets. Although most will be dogs, there are always a few cats and an occasional bird or rabbit.
"From a spiritual standpoint, all animals are one with us in God creation," Lewis said. "So we join other churches in honoring them and honoring all paths to God."
All animals are welcome, said Linda Cardamone, owner of the Three Legged Poodle. "This year, I think someone is even bringing a horse."
Whether they have fur, scales, feathers or shells, all animals must be leashed, caged or crated. Each receives a certificate of blessing and small gift.
The event will include free human and pet snacks, music by Gari, giveaways and samples. Pet-related vendors supplying free samples of pet products and animal care groups also will be on hand.
There also will be a memorial for pets that have died.
Episcopal and Catholic churches observe St. Francis of Assisi Feast Day on Oct. 4. The saint is considered patron of all animals and the environment.
"This is a way for us to give something back to the community and honor our animal friends, who add so much to our lives," Cardamone said. "Everyone, including the pets, seems to have a great time."
