Some members of the Florida Army National Guard's 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team who have been serving in Iraq have returned home to their families - just in time for Christmas.
About 80 soldiers boarded buses in Fort Stewart, Ga., today for the trip south to various Florida armories, where they were reunited with their loved ones.
For Specialist Daniel Perez and his stepfather, Sgt. 1st Class Robert Rivera of Sarasota, the homecoming is extra special. Both serve in the Florida Army National Guard. Rivera returned last Friday. Perez returned Tuesday night.
"I honestly didn't think we'd be home in time. It's the greatest present I can give really," said Perez, moments after he stepped off the chartered bus that dropped him off at the armory in Pinellas Park.
His stepdad couldn't agree more.
"I'm glad to be home because we had my other son here with my wife and we were hoping we would get here on time before Christmas," Rivera said.
As for any redeployment, the Florida Army National Guardsmen don't believe that will happen any time soon. They plan to enjoy the holidays, and get back to their civilian lives, at least until their country calls them again.
