A trailing pickup could not avoid hitting an overturned tractor-trailer early Tuesday on Interstate 75 in Manatee County, troopers said.
No serious injuries were reported after the driver of a northbound Chevrolet Silverado observed the rig but was unable to steer around it at 2:05 a.m. just south of State Road 70, troopers said.
Moments earlier, the driver of the tractor-trailer lost control, and the truck hit the west and east barrier walls before landing on its right side, blocking the highway’s northbound lanes, troopers said.
The truck driver, 61-year-old Donny Pannell, of Lakeland, was treated for minor injuries at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.
Minor injuries were reported by Gernan Flores Rodriguez, the Chevy’s driver, and her passenger, Maria Martinez, both 44, of Palmetto.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Pannell was cited for careless driving and Rodriguez for not having a driver’s license.
Traffic was blocked on the interstate much of the morning. All northbound lanes were reported open about 8 a.m.
