PLANT CITY - An 18-year-old man is recovering from a gunshot wound stemming from a shooting at Branchwood and Joe King roads, north of State Road 60 in the Bealsville area, officials said.
Deputies are looking for several suspects in connection with the shooting.
The victim, whose name was not released, was shot at 1:12 p.m. while in his car with two other people, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. The victim is in stable condition at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, officials said.
He was in a Dodge Charger southbound on Joe King Road when he pulled into a vacant area at 503 Joe King Road.
The suspects were in a vehicle that was already parked in the vacant area. The suspects got out of the vehicle and started firing at the victim's vehicle, deputies said. The victim and his passengers fled, crossed over a lawn and crashed into a wooded area.
One of the passengers, also an 18-year-old man, pulled the shooting victim from the driver's seat and put him in the back seat. He backed the car out of the woods and onto the roadway and called for help.
The other passenger fled the scene before deputies arrived.
A small amount of marijuana, one firearm and more than $1,000 in currency was recovered from the victim's car, officials said.
Deputies said they are looking for up to five suspects in the shooting. They were in a white Pontiac or Chevrolet with tinted windows.
It's unknown how many of them were armed.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.
