PLANT CITY - A pedestrian who was hit by a freight train about 3 p.m. Thursday did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, Fire Rescue Chief George Shiley said.

Gary Nelson, 35, was taken to South Florida Baptist Hospital to make sure he didn't have serious internal injuries, police and Shiley said. He was released from the hospital Friday.

Nelson was the second man to be hit by a train in Plant City in a 15-hour stretch, police said.

Nelson and Chris Raymond were walking west on the CSX tracks west of Waller Street, near Franklin Street, when a train hauling chemicals approached, police said. Raymond was able to get out of the way, but the left side of the engine clipped Nelson, police said.

Shiley said Nelson was conscious and alert following the accident.

In the second incident, shortly after midnight, Jerry Torres, 31, of Plant City, had his right foot "mangled" by a train, police said. Torres told police he was sitting near the tracks at Calhoun and Palmer streets when he was struck, officials said.

Torres was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he remained Monday. His condition wasn't available.
