PLANT CITY - The District 4 softball All-Star tournaments are taking place at North Lakeland Little League, and neither will be a very long event.
Only two teams are entered in both the 9- and 10-year-old and 11- and 12-year-old age groups.
Plant City just has a squad in the tournament for 9- and 10-year-olds, where its only opponent will be Lake Wales.
Essentially that makes for a best two-out-of-three series.
The teams play today at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. If one team sweeps both games, then obviously it is the district champ; otherwise a third game would be necessary to decide the title, and that would be at 6 p.m. Monday.
In the tournament for 11- and 12-year-olds, North Lakeland and Lake Wales are the only combatants.
District 4 generally fields at least four softball teams in its All-Star tournaments, but in recent years, the weaker programs have been on the end of such lopsided defeats that several just decided not to field a team this year.
Rustiness could be a factor for Plant City not entering an All-Star team for 11- and 12-year-olds. Its regular season ended in the middle of May.
North Lakeland Little League is at 7036 Green Road.
