A 5-year-old boy has died from injuries sustained in a Christmas Day accident, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Luis Contrerus, of Plant City, was pronounced dead on Saturday at Tampa General Hospital, FHP said.
Contrerus was a passenger in a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix involved in a 2:30 p.m. accident at U.S. Highway 92 and Branch Forbes Road.
The driver of the Grand Prix, Mario Lopez, 25, was traveling west on U.S. Highway 92, FHP said. Lopez, who has no known address, tried to make a left turn into a parking lot, but drove into the path of a 2006 Chrysler 300M that was heading east.
The Chrysler, driven by Eduardo Ruiz, 25, of Plant City, crashed into the right side of Lopez's car, FHP said.
Lopez, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested for driving without a license and providing false information to law enforcement officials.
Lopez's passengers Miguel Vasquez, 33, of Plant City and Marta Contrerus, 8, were seriously injured. Both were taken to Tampa General Hospital.
The collision also seriously injured Ruiz's passengers Maria Morales, 69, of Thonotosassa, who was taken to University Community Hospital; and Irene Ruiz, 69, Angela Ruiz, 8, and Lisette Yvette, 1, who were transported to TGH.
The crash remains under investigation.
