Diversity Is Center Stage At Durant

More than 50 students showed off their talents that included song, dance and other skills as Durant High School staged its annual Multicultural Show.

The students performed twice for fellow students and parents in the school auditorium. The show, which has been held for six or seven years, showcases the talents of the students and Durant's diversity, said science teacher Maria Walls, who organizes the show with Assistant Principal Theresa Williams.

Walls calls it one of the highlights of the year. "They the students really get into it," she said.

Entries this year included gospel, country and hip-hop, poetry and tango and break-dancing performances.

Walls said the school holds auditions that are judged by two teachers. The students selected to perform hold practices before the show, she said.

About 1,000 students bought tickets to attend the performances, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The shows generated a total of $1,100 for the cause, she said, about the same as last year.

Walls said the school has 2,000 students with diverse backgrounds. The performance "is an opportunity for students to not only display their pizzazz, but to also sit back and recognize the diversity that surrounds them on a daily basis," she wrote in an e-mail.
