Mayor Dan Raulerson paid tribute last week to Plant City High School graduate and prominent Tampa attorney Warren M. Cason, who died July 15.

Raulerson presented a proclamation to Cason's family that praised him for his community, business and educational service.

Cason graduated in 1942 from Plant City High, then served as part of a Navy underwater demolition team in World War II. He received his law degree in 1950 from the University of Florida, and he remained a loyal Gator, serving as president of the university's foundation, alumni association and Gator Boosters, among other titles.

He began law career in Orlando then moved to Tampa. His firm merged with Holland and Knight in 1989.

Cason's family "was his number one priority," Raulerson said in his proclamation.

His survivors include his wife Dorothy, four children, 12 grandchildren.

Cason's son-in-law, George Howell, thanked the city for the proclamation.

"Warren was always so proud of his roots in this community, a little place called Springhead," Howell said. "The day before he died he asked Mary Lib (Cason's daughter and Howell's wife) to take him for a drive around east Hillsborough County. They drove for about five hours, looking at his home. "

Commissioner May Mathis recalled her family's relationship with Cason, who was 85 when he died.

"My father (Willie Thomas) and Mr. Cason knew each other in the Springhead community for over 50 years," Mathis said. "He was a man who was stern, fair, but consistent. Mr. Cason had an ardent love affair with the Gators. I remember a time when my father and son Anthony and I went by Mr. Cason's house to pick up something. My son was wearing a jersey that represented a rival college (Florida State). It took my son several encounters to realize you didn't wear rival colors of the Gators."
