Steve Brady surveyed the scene outside Harmony Baptist Church on Jan. 12, where a construction crew with a cause worked to raise a 5,000-square-foot steel building.
"This will be our fellowship hall and family center," said Brady, associate pastor of the church built in 2002 at 6008 W. Knights-Griffin Road. "We are so excited."
Eight Craftsmen For Christ volunteers from North Carolina, Virginia and other locales traveled to Plant City to work for free on the weeklong construction project.
Ronnie Venable founded the ministry in 1995 to lend a hand to small churches, children's homes and other faith-based organizations that aren't physically or financially able to build by themselves.
"We go in and relieve that burden," Venable said.
The ministry doesn't charge a dime for the manpower they provide. They ask only for food and a place to sleep.
Randal Lunsford, an unemployed wallpaper hanger from Germantown, N.C., said he enjoys traveling with the group, working with a team and meeting new people.
"That's just what I enjoy, not why I do it," Lunsford said. "I do it because the Lord wants me to. That's what this ministry is all about."
