Registration is open through Feb. 19 for a youth soccer program that seeks to build character as well as sporting skills.
The Plant City Recreation and Parks Department/Optimist Youth Soccer Program is in its 34th season for youths ages 4 to 18. The program includes basic training in soccer skills and rules along with positive leadership to build the character of the players.
Last year, more than 1,500 youths of both genders participated in 11 age groups. Players in the 12- to 14-year-old and 15- to 18-year-old age groups play Tuesday evenings while everyone else plays on Saturday mornings.
Teams are limited to a maximum of two team meetings per week, including games and practices. The seven-game season starts March 23 and runs through June 8. Players ages 8 to 18 will also participate in a post-season tournament.
Registration is $35 and includes supplemental accident insurance coverage and jersey. Players are required to provide black shorts and shin guards. Multipurpose soccer cleats or sneakers are acceptable.
Program and registration details, including on-line payment information and an information flyer, are available at www.plantcitygov.com or by contacting the recreation and parks department's administrative office at (813) 659-4255.
