Almost everyone who spoke at the funeral service for fallen soldier David A Croft Jr. gave thanks not only to him for his dedication and sacrifice, but also gave thanks to his family for the sacrifice they have made in his loss.
A general, speaking for the Secretary of the Army, Croft's former commander, Plant City Mayor Rick Lott and Shiloh Baptist Church pastor Joe Bowles all praised the family for their strength and courage in a very difficult time.
Croft was killed in Iraq on Jan. 5.
Bowles opened the two-hour funeral service with a prayer, thanking God for the life and service of the fallen soldier. About 500 people sat in the church, with 200 more outside the building holding American flags to honor Croft's sacrifice.
"David died in the service of his country," Bowles said. "He died for us."
Religious and patriotic songs were sung by Shiloh Baptists, Katie Pierce, and recordings were played over the sound system. Speakers came to the podium, each to honor the family and Croft.
"Thank you, Mrs. Croft," Gen. Napper said, for the service of your son. "I was told David grew up watching the war being fought for freedom on television. He wanted to be a soldier. He wanted to make a difference in the world. He was all about duty and service."
"From his commanders I know he was a dedicated soldier. He was my brother and comrade."
Croft was the recipient of a bronze star and Purple Heart.
His former commander, Capt. Dewalt, said Croft was a rock for his platoon, giving them a strong shoulder to lean on.
"Sgt. Croft not only volunteered for the Army, he volunteered for the toughest assignments," Dewalt said. "We must never forget that David stood between us and the people who would do our country harm. Good night, my friend."
