The United Food Bank got a big boost recently in its efforts to feed the community's needy.
Sister's & Company, a specialty retailer, presented a $10,000 donation Wednesday to the food bank as part of Brighton's Feed Our Friends fundraiser. The boutique at 104 E. Reynolds St. was among retailers across the United States that joined with Brighton last summer in selling a limited-edition collection of semi-precious jewelry to raise money to help feed struggling Americans.
Sister's nominated the food bank for the donation from Brighton.
"When we heard that there was an opportunity to help feed the hungry, specifically in our area, we were so excited; we hold the food bank particularly close to our hearts. Never could we imagine that our nomination would so greatly benefit our community, this is such a blessing," said Devony Scott, an owner of Sister's & Company.
Sister's fundraising included a fashion show last summer at Red Rose Inn and Suites. Julie Frick of Brighton Collectibles, and Cathy Davenport and Devony Scott of Sister's presented the check to food bank Executive Director Kelleigh Klein.
Klein was thrilled with the money.
"The United Food Bank is very grateful to Devony for utilizing her creative business talents to plan a fun evening of fashion and lead a strong grassroots effort that has led to this very generous donation from Brighton," Klein said.
Laura Young, president of sales and marketing for Brighton, a Los Angeles-based maker of fine ladies accessories, said the food bank was selected from among hundreds of suggestions of causes.
.Brighton produces handbags, jewelry, belts, footwear, small leather essentials and gifts that Sister's & Company sells at its stores in downtown Plant City and at 14145 7th St., Dade City.
