Plant City couples honored for patriotism

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Maj. John Devane Chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution recently presented certificates of commendation to two Plant City couples for exemplary patriotism in the display of the flag of the United States of America.

Bill and Susan Osmanski and William and Laura Midyette were honored with the certificates. Bill and Susan have been flying the American flag at their home for 32 years — their entire married life. Bill is a Plant City police officer who recently received national recognition for rescuing a woman from a sinkhole.

Earlier in the Osmanskis' marriage, Susan donated a kidney to Bill, proving a perfect match in more ways than one.

William Midyette opened his Plant City dentistry office in 1957 and has flown the flag there for at least 50 years. He is a former U.S. Merchant Marine seaman. His boat was TB109.

Laura, a dental hygienist who volunteers at First Presbyterian Church of Plant City, said they have worn out many flags through the years.

Campin' and pickin'

The Central Florida Bluegrass Association will host a "picking camping weekend" at the Berry Patch, 5230 Berry Patch Road, in Dover, this Friday through Sunday.

Recent improvements have been made to the camp, where the $20 camping fee includes electricity, water, full kitchen, bathrooms, showers, fire pit, barns and plenty of green grass for picking bluegrass. Tent camping is $10; day trippers, $5. Bring your own beverages, and picking goes on as long as you want; no curfews.

CFBA T-shirts will be available. RSVP at CFBA.News@gmail.com, or call (863) 397-4497.

Native American perspective

Dian Dreaming Dove and Sandra White Owl of the Intertribal Cultural Society of Plant City will lead an all-age discussion on cultural and historic perspectives of Native Americans at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The program, at 705 N. Alexander St., Plant City, is free.

For information, call Shawna Everidge, environmental education coordinator, Water Resource Management Division, City of Plant City, (813) 659-4298, ext. 4904.
