Dozens of cases involving driving under the influence in Polk County are being dropped or not filed after concerns arose about how Deputy Tex Thomas performed his job, sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said.
"We are investigating a situation where we've had some DUI cases dismissed," Wood said.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office has reassigned Thomas to patrol duty, pending the outcome of the investigation.
"I can also confirm that no matter what issues have been raised, we, the PCSO, will do the right thing, but it's entirely too early to make any blanket statements about what we will or won't be doing - other than, we will do the right thing," Wood wrote in an e-mail to The Tampa Tribune. "I can also confirm that regardless of the outcome of this investigation, people who drive drunk will be arrested - that's our job."
