A 3-week-old boy remained in serious condition at Tampa General Hospital this morning after being burned in a house fire Wednesday afternoon, officials said today.
Brantavian Lovelace was asleep in the bedroom that caught fire. The child suffered second-degree burns on his feet and legs, said his father, Brandon Lovelace. No one else was injured, the fire department said.
Firefighters responded at 2:24 p.m. Wednesday to the house fire at 2526 Weber St. The fire was confined to one bedroom, but there was heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the house.
Three adults were outside the home when the fire broke out. Four children were also at the home, but it is not known whether they were inside or outside the home when the fire broke out, the fire department said. It isn't clear whether the four children identified by authorities include the 3-week-old.
Brandon Lovelace said the fire started in the front bedroom. Lovelace and his fiancé were outside for 15 to 20 minutes. When they entered the home, they noticed a small fire. Lovelace tried to put out the fire, but it became too big, he said.
Lovelace, the father of seven children who live at the home, said he believes the fire started from an overheated laptop computer.
The state fire marshal's office will investigate the cause of the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting the family of 10. The family has declined temporary housing but will accept clothing and grocery assistance from the American Red Cross.
