Thousands of local homeowners don't pay a dime in property taxes.
Nothing.
And the numbers are growing.
More than 7,000 homeowners paid no property taxes in Hillsborough County last year. That's about 2,000 more than in 2008.
And not all the homes are in low-income areas. Some are modest homes; others are extravagant.
For example, recently built middle-class homes that contain toxic Chinese made drywall also get devalued by the county.
How much is that costing the government? Hillsborough County collected $1.5 billion in property taxes in 2010. In 2008, tax revenue was much higher at $1.9 billion.
In Sunday's Tampa Tribune, Reporter Shannon Behnken explains why so many more people have no taxes due and shows examples of homes with a taxable value of zero.
