Hillsborough Area Regional Transit is adding three new flex routes to its schedule this month.
That means more people can get rides right from their front door by calling and reserving a seat in one of HART's vans.
"It's a win-win for both the rider and for HART," said company information officer Marcia Mejia. "It's a more flexible schedule than the bus, and especially if the commute is nearby or even within their own community."
And it costs HART less to operate the vans than the buses.
The new flex routes are in Northdale, South Tampa and Town 'N Country.
In South Shore, the route runs mainly along College Avenue (State Road 674) and a half-mile in either direction. Riders can either make reservations or show up at a stop along the route; they are spaced about every two blocks.
The cost for a ride on the flex bus is 85 cents, which is less than it costs to ride a HART bus one way, Mejia said. An unlimited day pass is $1.85.
To make a reservation within three hours of the trip time, call (813) 449-4555 or go to www.hartline.org, then click on maps and schedules and on HART flex.
Mejia said HART has seen an increase in ridership since adding the flex program.
