TAMPA - A worker is recovering this morning at Tampa General Hospital after an accident at a Dover Street recycling company, officials said.

The man, whose name was not released, works for a subcontractor that is based out of Louisiana, said Jeff Smith, facilities manager for Trademark Metals Recycling, where the accident took place.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue was called in at 10 a.m. to remove a large piece of metal pinning a 21-year-old man against a backhoe, spokesman Ray Yeakley said. The man was airlifted to Tampa General.

The company is at 5220 Dover St., off U.S. 41.

Witnesses gave rescuers different accounts of what happened, so the cause of the accident is unclear, Yeakley said.

Smith said the man was cutting a piece of steel scrap when it fell on his ankle. The worker was wearing safety boots and other protective gear, and he was conscious the entire time.

The facility has no safety citations, and it has an outstanding safety record, said Trademark's safety manager, Terry McWhoter. An internal investigation will be conducted, he said.

There were five other workers present when this happened, Smith said.
