SUN CITY CENTER - The elderly who feel they have been victims of con artists can turn to the Florida Attorney General's Office, which is sponsoring the Senior vs. Crime project.
The project offers educational and crime-prevention programs to seniors and community groups, investigates complaints and seeks restitution for those who have been victimized, and provides agencies with senior volunteers to assist with investigations.
Those who feel they have a case should gather documentation pertaining to the complaint. This would include receipts, contracts, canceled checks, brokerage account statements and contacts, if available.
The Sun City Center office can be contacted at (813) 634-8666. Its address is 137 S. Pebble Beach Blvd., Suite 204.
A volunteer is assigned to each case and tries to resolve it through informal mediation.
Seniors vs. Crimes has recovered millions of dollars for those who have been victimized and has expedited contract completions and repairs for others. Some cases, however, may need to be turned over to another agency or small-claims court.
Any case that is determined to involve a criminal offense is turned over to a law enforcement agency. Assistance will be provided throughout the process.
The Sun City Center office also is seeking volunteers to help. For information, call Norm at (813) 634-8666.
