Readers Comment On Whaley's Closing

»  Comments | Post a Comment

After more than seven decades of selling fruits, vegetables and other groceries to South Tampa shoppers, Whaley's Market on South Howard Avenue closed its doors for the final time Sunday.

TBO.com readers posted scores of comments about the shuttering of the SoHo landmark:

"I'm a fourth generation Tampa resident and although much of our family has moved to other parts of the country we usually get together in Anna Maria every two to three years for a big family reunion. As the last one in Tampa, it's my job to continue a long-standing family tradition and stop at Whaley's for a mountain of Cuban sandwiches. It just wouldn't be the same without those wax-papered beauties! Let's hope and pray they open up somewhere else soon. This was so sudden - just unbelievable!"

"A real slice of Tampa history. I remember going there (also Lazzaras and Copelands in Seminole Heights) as a kid in the '60s with my grandparents. I am sorry to see this place go."

"It also goes to show, that if you don't support local business, it may not be there to support you when the time is needed."

"Man that stinks. I guess I need to stock up on the twice-baked potatoes."

"Who cares ... now all the rich snobs will have to shop elsewhere. The real Whaley's has been gone for years. Maybe they will open up another bar, because they sure don't have enough of those in SOHO."

"Another Tampa institution gone. I tell people that the old Tampa we knew is dying. This is just another example of how true it is."

"I shop at Wal-Mart because it is cheap but I don't buy produce there because it has no flavor. When you are low on dough, your choices are few. Besides, it sounds like Whaley's is just looking to reorganize and reopen in a better setup so why all the 'tragic' comments? Take a look around and you will see numerous examples of real hardship and tragedy that makes having to drive a little further for over-priced fresh produce not that big of a deal."

"Not always the cheapest, but always the best! ... I'd like to have a nickel for every T-bone I bought there. It really is more than a store, more of an experience and when you say you have been to Whaley's there is kind of a lift in your voice."

"Wow! I remember going there every Saturday morning for veggies and stuff. Could someone ship me some stuff up here to New York before they close?"

"Whaley's has provided much pleasure for me and my family over the years. Whether I wanted six green beans or six pounds, I could count on Whaley's for fresh produce, meats and prepared foods. The Mom & Pop shops are needed to keep local flavor and revenues in the community. Please reopen somewhere close. Thanks for many years of great service. Love those guava cookies."
