The Friends of Weedon Island is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the return of three artifacts stolen from an exhibit at the preserve.
The artifacts, two pins made of deer bone and an ornamental, fossilized bone plummet, disappeared from a display case at the Weedon Island Preserve's Cultural and Natural History Center on June 21 or 22.
Their monetary value is unknown, but one official called them local treasures and asked people to be on the lookout for anyone trying to sell them.
"This theft is directly linked to a number of local, state and federal laws that protect such artifacts for the public good," said Bruce Rinker of the Pinellas County environmental management department. "Such items belong to our children and our children's children, not to someone who steals from an education center."
Anyone with information can contact Friends of Weedon Island at (727) 347-0083.
