TAMPA HEIGHTS - The city's Architectural Review Commission will vote Wednesday on plans to rehabilitate the former Fire Station No. 5.
Local artist Dominique Martinez bought the 6,500-square-foot building for $365,000 from the city last year and plans to turn it into his residence and a first-floor art gallery.
Martinez and architect Franklin Sebastian will present restoration plans for the 1925 building and plans to add a two-car garage and fencing.
In June, they plan to present the project's second phase to the commission, including a 1,000-square-foot addition at the rear. The addition would have a contemporary metal roof and exterior walls.
The station, 1910 N. Florida Ave., is a historical building and is located in local and national historical districts. It was last used as a fire station in 1984 and then was used temporarily by organizations.
Martinez owns Rustic Steel Creations in the Channel District. The company makes custom gates, railings, furniture, mirrors and outdoor sculptures, including giant dragons.
The commission meets in the city council chambers on the third floor of city hall, 315 E. Kennedy Blvd.
