BALLAST POINT - The city's parks and recreation department and a business owner want to allow beer and wine sales at the Taste of Boston restaurant, located in Ballast Point Park in the 5200 block of Interbay Boulevard.
The city council will consider the request at 6 p.m. Thursday at city hall, 315 E. Kennedy Blvd.
It would be the first time permanent alcohol sales have been allowed at a city park and could pave the way for similar requests at other publicly owned locations.
The parks department also wants to rezone Ragan Park, 1200 E. Lake Ave., and Seminole Garden Center, 5800 Central Ave., so the facilities can be more competitive attracting rentals by allowing caterers to serve alcohol, according to a spokeswoman.
Alcohol usually isn't allowed in city parks, but nonprofit groups can apply to the council for temporary alcohol permits for special events.
George Illes opened the New England-style seafood and ice cream restaurant in 2004 through a lease with the city. The 7-acre Ballast Point Park also has a boat launch, picnic shelters, playground and fitness center.
The request requires two votes: one to rezone the land on which the restaurant sits next to the pier; the other to grant the alcohol permit.
The Ballast Point Neighborhood Association hasn't taken a position on the request.
