Tampa police saw a dead man through the car window, but since it was pouring in the parking lot, they had to wait two hours to delve deeply into their investigation.
They didn't want rain washing away forensic evidence today from the car at Air Animal Pet Movers, 4120 W. Cypress St.
The victim, who is described as a black male in his 20s or 30s, suffered upper-body trauma, police said. The body was found in the front of a tan Chevrolet Malibu. Police were called about 9:45 a.m. by a person who said there was a body in the vehicle.
The pet-moving business was founded in 1977 by veterinarian Walter Woolf and his wife, Millie, according to the company's Web site. Walter Woolf said a person called him about 10 a.m. today to tell him someone was sleeping in his parking lot. When Woolf arrived at work, he found police on scene.
He said there were bullet casings in the parking lot.
During the day, the neighborhood is generally good, Woolf said.
But at night, he said, there has been some criminal activity. As a result, he recently ordered surveillance cameras for the business. They are not up at the business yet, he said.
Woolf's employees are trying to continue working today.
Customers to the business will be escorted in by police, police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said.
The medical examiner has taken the body and investigators are working to determine the cause of death. It could take several days, Davis said.
