A 21-year-old Tampa man fleeing police crashed his Toyota into a police cruiser and continued to flee Sunday morning, police say.

John Carnegie abandoned the Toyota, ran into a home at 3411 W. Pearl Ave. and hid in a closet, police say. Canine officers were allowed in the home, and Carnegie was caught. He suffered minor dog bites.

Carnegie's passenger, Martavia Haggins, 21, was arrested a few blocks from the abandoned Toyota.

The incident began Sunday morning when an officer tried stopping Carnegie following a neighborhood dispute involving a possible shotgun. Instead of stopping, Carnegie fled and drove straight at another officer's marked car, according to a police report.

"The suspect vehicle swerved back toward its lane at the last second," the report states. "The marked unit remained stopped and the left side of the suspect vehicle slammed into the front of the marked police unit. Although heavily damaged, the suspect vehicle fled from the incident."

The officer wasn't injured.

Carnegie and Haggins were each charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing to elude, and obstructing or opposing an officer without violence. Carnegie also was charged with trespassing in an occupied structure.

Carnegie and Haggins remain in jail this morning. Carnegie's bail is set at $23,500; Haggins' is set at $23,000.
