Retired NFL coach Tony Dungy advocated heart screenings for high school students during a news conference this morning.
Dungy, a former head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts, spoke for the Cardiac Arrhythmia Syndromes Foundation during the gathering at Plant High School.
The foundation, in collaboration with All Children's Specialty Physicians and Hillsborough County Public Schools, unveiled its SafeBeat awareness campaign to provide heart screenings to all Hillsborough County high school students.
More than 7,000 children and adolescents die annually from sudden cardiac arrest, according to the foundation. Four of five victims appeared healthy and had no symptoms prior to their death, the foundation said in the news release.
The best way to possibly prevent sudden cardiac arrest is with an electrocardiogram-based screening.
At the news conference, an EKG technician demonstrated how the screenings are done.
