TAMPA Longtime Tampa General Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer Cathy Phillips of Tampa was among five local recipients of the annual Tampa Bay Buccaneers "community quarterback" award that honors people who make extraordinary community contributions through volunteer work.
Cathy received the award during a banquet held on March 22 at One Buccaneer Place, the team's training facility, for her efforts to develop the hospital's Compassionate Companions program.
Through the program, launched in 2009, specially-trained hospital volunteers visit and comfort dying patients. Earlier this year she also received the "humanitarian of the year" award from the Seaport Sertoma Club in Tampa for her work with the program.
"It was incredible," said Phillips. "I don't do this to get that kind of recognition, but it's nice to be appreciated."
As part of the award, the Bucs will donate $1,000 in Phillip's name to the TGH Volunteer Auxiliary and to the Seaport Sertoma Club of Tampa.
