The Port of Tampa's container cargo business and cruise industry have shown signs of growth in the past six months while bulk and general cargo continues to suffer from the recession, port officials said today.
Container cargo shipments rose 49 percent between January and March compared with the same period a year ago to 15,107 20-foot equivalent containers, contributing to a 35 percent gain to 26,468 containers the first six months of the fiscal year that began in October.
The number of cruise passengers who embarked and disembarked – each is counted twice - rose 5 percent in the second quarter compared with a year ago to 265,675. Cruise passengers have increased 12 percent from October through March compared with a year ago to 509,658.
Bulk and general cargo, primarily because of declines in vehicles, phosphate and construction materials other than steel, declined 3 percent for the first six months of the fiscal year at port authority-controlled property to 6.7 million tons.
Bulk and general cargo was off 5 percent to 16.9 million tons for the first six months to 16.9 million tons at both port authority-controlled and private facilities.
